The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23
Can’t keep a good dog down, She was still keen to work cattle, even with one eye squinted tightly shut. Antibiotic ointment wasn’t clearing it up, so off to the Vet who lifted up her second eyelid and discovered a sizeable grass seed jabbed into the eyeball. No wonder the dejected dog was so miserable. Every time she blinked, the grass seed shot over the eyeball, causing pain and an ulcer to form. What a relief to have the seed out and to regain single vision. Having a ‘bad’ eye gives you double vision. Go cross-eyed for a few seconds and you’ll see how tough it is to get around while looking in two directions at the same time. Some of us have spiritual double vision and we don’t even know it. We think we are seeing straight but we’re off the beaten track. Having a clear eye means having single minded devotion to God, serving Him as our everything, not serving Him plus an idol or two.
God says in Isaiah 42:8, “I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.” God knows He is God. He knows He is the greatest. He knows all glory is His and He is not about to share it with any idol we might be dancing cross-eyed with. It’s as though God is saying, “I am the greatest – look at Me. With single vision, look at Me.” Too much to ask? If God said “I am God but it’s ok for you to live however you like,” that would not be loving us. Imagine a parent saying to a child, “I am your parent but it’s OK for you to live however you like.” God commands our single vision because He knows it is the best for us. To ask for less would prove He is not worthy of our worship. If you go on living with double vision it ultimately leads to a darkened, double life. One that robs God of His glory and you of joy. Huge relief will come when you get your eyes straightened out and enjoy the blessing of single, healthy vision. Then your life will reflect light, not darkness.
Father, You are God – You are the greatest. I want single vision so that I can run a straight race full of light which brings glory to You. You deserve it. In Jesus name, Amen.
